Have you read this book? Yes, this is the story of Bill Browder the CEO of Hermitage Capital Manage. It focuses on the time that he worked as an investment manager in Russia and continues with the Russian Government’s attack on him and his team.
After going to Stanford Business School, Mr. Browder moved to London and became a British citizen. He worked for several companies managing investments in Russia. In 1996, he founded Hermitage Capital Management with Edmond Safra who invested 25 million dollars in seed money. From 1995-2006 the fund was extremely successful and was one of the largest companies investing in Russia. Then his team discovered and exposed corporate corruption in the Russia. The government didn’t appreciate Mr. Browder’s views and kicked him out of the country.
Mr. Browder was able to get most of his team out of the country but his attorney, Sergei Magnitsky, wouldn’t leave because he trusted his government and he said that hadn’t done anything wrong. Immediately he was arrested and sent to prison. Less than a year later, he was succumbed to tortured and died while still in prison.
This is only a tiny taste of Mr. Browder’s story and I know you will find it fascinating. You should read this book.
Bill Browder is still CEO of Hermitage Capital Management, but these days his focus is on Human Rights. He was instrumental in getting the United States to pass the Magnitsky Act, which placed major sanctions on Russia for human rights abuses. Presently, Mr. Browder is working with Canada to get them to pass a similar bill.
Considering Mr. Trump’s attitude toward Mr. Putin and Russia, everybody should read this book. At this time, a screen play is being written.
