I finally made it back to Amsterdam last week. I have been wanting to visit for quite a while since this is where the Tulips are!
Right now they are in bloom. I especially wanted to see the rows and rows of tulips growing in the fields. Instead of looking for the fields we went to the amazing park at Keukenhof. I arrived in France on Saturday and we left Marseille for Amsterdam on Monday morning. Robin organized our trip. We were expecting iffy weather but were pleasantly surprised. We only had a tiny bit of rain.
We allotted 1 day to the Keukenhof Gardens where 16 acres are consecrated to the magnificent flowers. 7 million bulbs have been planted and most were in bloom this this past week. You won’t see all of them in my photos but apparently they planted 800 varieties of tulips. From the amount of photos that I have included in this blog, you can see that I tried to take pictures of all of them. 2015 is the the Van Gogh year in Keukenhof. This year is the 125th anniversary of his death.
Keukenhof isn’t just for adults. The little ones will adore the playground, the goats, rabbits, peacocks, chickens , potbelly pigs and sheep.
Once all the the bulbs have finished blooming, the 30 plus gardeners will remove them from the ground. The bulbs will then be destroyed. In September, they will begin planting the new bulbs for 2016. It will take them 3 months to get all the new bulbs planted.
After seeing this display, I will have to plant tulips next fall, and not just the plain ones.
Keukenhof is open from 20 March – 17 May 2015 and from 08.00 – 19.30. The ticket office is open from 08.00 – 18.00. Dogs are permitted in the park if they are on leash.
