There is a new museum in Rodez.
It features the abstract artist Pierre Soulages who was born in Rodez in 1919. He is the best-known French contemporary artist in the world. His works are in more than 90 museums and he has created more than 1500 works of art.
It was in the 1940’s that Mr. Soulages first started showing his art in Europe. In the 50’s he moved on to showings in New York City. In 2010, at a retrospective at the Musee Pompidou, more than 500,000 people visited his exhibition.
In 2005, Mr. Soulages and his wife, Colette, agreed to donate 500 pieces of art to the town of Rodez in the department of Aveyron. The selections range from oil to his phase of art called Outrenoir. Mr. Soulages mostly painted black and other dark works but he did use blue, red and brown as can be seen in the museum. This is the first time a living French artist has ever made such an important donation.
The building is very modern, composed of glass and rust colored Corten steel. The new museum opened on May 30, 2014. Mr. Soulages as well as the President of France, Francois Hollande were at the opening. Visitors are allowed to take pictures as long as they don’t use a flash.
The technique for the painting that Jacques is inspecting is called Outrenoir. With the addition of light and reflection, the paintings take on another aspect. For information in French and English consult the internet or best of all visit this wonderful museum in Rodez.
