Once a month I get to volunteer in the Gift Shot at Lucile Packard CHildren’s Hospital. This hospital is located next door to Stanford Hospital in Palo ALto, California. This job is really fun and uplifting. First of all, my partner is my Mom who has volunteered with the organization for more than 50 years.
Working in the gift shop is really a privilege. It is only 180 Sq Ft but it is crammed with plush toys and gifts, mostly for children but some are available for adults. Our nurses and doctors are some of our best customers.
Today we started work at 1:00 and finished at 5:00. People dribbled in buying lots of candy as well as lots of baby gifts. There were also some bribes as well as rewards for the kids who did well at their appointments.
One of the high lights today was a young man who was sitting in a wheel chair in the lobby. He was about 16 years old and very friendly. He asked our names and then introduced himself. He was going to be admitted so we wished him well as his mom wheeled him up stairs.
If you have the time, be sure to volunteer in some capacity. Hospital gift shops may not be your cup of tea but I bet there is something out there that you will love doing as much and Mom and I love what we do.
